This I suppose in some ways is the parallel
to the Visual Communications portfolio--albeit on the opposite
end of the spectrum. Here you'll find a graduate school
paper on the Pentium 4, digital darkroom tips, a link to my
undergraduate thesis, small applications I wrote as an
undergrad, work I did at NASA, and other web sites I've
designed. |

Intel Pentium 4 and NetBurst
Micro-Architecture
Discusses the Intel Pentium 4
processor and accompanying NetBurst Micro-Architecture.
Topics included are: IA-32 instruction set architecture,
NetBurst overview, hyper-threading, P4 Memory and I/O, and an
analysis of the design decisions. Information current
through the 3.06 GHz version of the processor.

Printing and Scanning Hardware and software--especially in the
"digital darkroom" domain usually require a lot of tweaking in
order to work the way you want. Over the years, I've
picked up a lot of useful information on the Internet.
Here are two PDFs on topics I struggled with that I thought I
would share with anyone who happens to be looking for such
information. I'm not guaranteeing that these documents are
100% correct, but they work for me.

Monitor Calibration
Monitor calibration is an important step for
computer users (especially digital artists) to ensure that what
you see on your monitor will look similar to what others' will
see on their monitors. I've found a few useful web sites
that can help those of us who can't afford a high-end
calibration system. I've found the following the steps on
the web sites at right to set the brightness and contrast of
your monitor and then using Adobe Gamma (comes with Photoshop)
to set the gamma is a workable solution.

Blurring the Line
Algorithms and Aesthetics of Image Filtering
An honors thesis presented to the Department
of Mathematics & Computer Science at Wittenberg University
18 April 2001
Abstract:
The computer has been used as a tool in the manipulation of
digital images for almost forty years. In the past digital image
processing, for the most part, has meant image restoration (or
possibly image enhancement) due to the common degradation of
image quality in the digital conversion. However recently the
computer has been seen by some as an extension of the
photographic darkroom, and in many instances, an entire art
medium in itself.
|
This research investigates both the technical and non-technical sides of digital image filtering, illustrating a recent ‘blur’ between the once disjoint lines of computer science and art. Both general purpose and ‘artistic’ algorithms for digital image filters (some of which are unique to this research) are explained and implemented in a computer program in order to easily observe the results.

GENESearch
Research was done to find an efficient
string-searching algorithm which was then modified to handle the
specific assignment as requested by the Wittenberg University
Biology Department. Users may enter a DNA string (input
from file acceptable) and a string to search for (with
wildcards). Upon class completion of the assignment
Biology chose this implementation to use in their classes.

Context-Free Parser
I wrote this program for my Theory of Computation class which
dealt primarily with grammar and language study. The
program allows the user to define a context free grammar and
then test it on a certain character string to determine if the
string is in the language. There is a help page which
lists what each field on the main screen does and the
restrictions that are imposed on the grammar. Written for
'Theory of Computation', Wittenberg University, Fall 1998.

Crazy Eights Card Game
Everyone's favorite game!! (Ok, just kidding.) This was my first
real program that did something more than calculate tax or a
factorial (or some other simple computation good for beginning
programmers). It was assigned at the end of my
introductory Pascal programming class. Written for 'Computer
Programming I', Wittenberg University, Fall 1997.

During the summer of 1999 I interned
with a group of engineers at the Goddard Space Flight Center on
the Technology Scanning and Assessment committee. My
primary objective was to determine the format and type of
information to be included in the bulletins the committee would
produce and write a few myself. The first link on the
right is my report to the intern program head explaining what I
accomplished over the summer; the remaining are the actual
reports. (External links in the bulletins are not
maintained. There is no guarantee that they are still
valid.) Summer 1999

Besides this, my personal web site, the only
others accredited to my design are
the Mathematics & Computer Science and Art departmental web sites at
Wittenberg, and a site for my uncle's business. Since graduation, I no longer maintain
either of the school sites.
