San Francisco International Airport's new Terminal 2 re-opened to the public on April 14, 2011. T2, which was SFO's former international terminal, closed in 2000 when the new international terminal opened and has been vacant since. With the increase in passengers to SFO, more gates were needed for domestic airlines. The new 640,000 square foot T2 has 14 gates, seven of which will be used by Virgin America, six by American Airlines, and the remaining gate will be shared. The project began in 2008.
A week before the official opening, SFO hosted an open house for the public to see the new terminal. The clean modern interior pays subtle homage to its former life, features 12 restaurants, 9 retail shops, a "farmers market", and a spa.
