Who I am
This website is maintained by Jason Waltman. My website address is https://www.jasonwaltman.com. Contact me by sending a note on this website's contact form.
Comments
When you leave comments on my blog, I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also your IP address and browser user agent string to help in spam detection.
If you provided an optional url in the website field, this url is used to turn your name into a hyperlink when displayed next to the comment.
Media
If you link to an image in a comment, you should avoid images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors can download and extract any location data from images linked in a comment.
Contact form
If you send a message on my contact form, only the information you provide (name, email, subject, message, and whether or not you would like to subscribe to my newsletter) is collected. A verification word is required to prevent spam but is not collected. This form sends me an email. You should expect a reply.
Data you enter in the contact form is preserved on the client if you navigate away from the contact page, refresh the page, or attempt to submit the form with errors. This is for your convenience so you do not accidently lose information. This data disappears when the client is closed or when a message is sent successfully.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on my blog you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
A "spam-destroyer" cookie is stored after visiting a blog page with a comment form. This cookie is necessary to prevent spam comments. It does not gather any personal information and expires after one hour.
A session ID cookie, PHPSESSID, is stored after visiting my contact page. This cookie is native to PHP and is necessary for the contact form to work properly. It does not gather any personal information. As the PHPSESSID cookie has no timed expiry, it disappears when the client is closed.
Analytics
I do not use cookies or persistent identifiers for tracking visitors to this site. Usage is tracked anonymously by Plausible.io.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you had visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
How long I retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
Email messages sent to me on the contact page are retained indefinitely.
What rights you have over your data
If you have left comments on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments are also checked through Akismet, an automated spam detection service. Akismet collects your IP address, browser user agent, referrer, and site URL (along with other information directly provided by you such as name, email address, website, and the comment itself). Learn how your comment data is processed by Akismet.
Newsletter and emails
If you have subscribed to my newsletter, sent a message on my contact form, or purchased prints or licenses from me directly, there is a good chance you will receive emails from me.
I will only send you emails that you have signed up to receive, or which pertain to the services I have provided to you.
To send you emails, I use the name and email address you provide. If you subscribed to my newsletter, I also log the IP address you used when you signed up to prevent abuse of the system.
This website can send emails through the MailPoet sending service. This service allows me to track opens and clicks on my emails. I use this information to improve the content of my newsletters.
No identifiable information is otherwise tracked outside this website except for the email address.
